Industrial Microwave Purée Heating is a sterilization process for fruits, vegetables, and pumpable foods using microwave system technology. IMS is a co-owner of process patents involving the rapid sterilization of pumpable foods and biomaterials, via exposure to electromagnetic energy. We helped develop the first-of-its-kind commercial process to adopt innovative technoloy for aseptic processing and packaging of sweet potato purée using industrial microwaves.

After extensive collaboration with the USDA, Department of Food Science and researchers at NCSU, IMS received a Food Technology Industrial Achievement Award for its industrial microwave purée heating cylindrical system technology.
Additionally, IMS has been recognized for a USDA Agricultural Research Services Technology Transfer Award.
The use of our equipment enabled farmers in North Carolina the ability to process, and add value to, a crop previously ploughed back into the land or sold as animal food. Our industrial microwave purée heating system eliminated wastage, and turned cost into a profit. As a result of our work, we helped offset the up to 45% of annual harvest in the State of North Carolina that did not meet the standard for retail sales.
Instead, IMS technology helped add value to previously unusable sweet potatoes. Through research and collaboration, IMS innovated a pioneering process. In addition, we addressed the shortcomings of conventional food preservation methods of low-acid, shelf-stable foods.

We use food-grade materials for pumping and processing products through a pipe, on a continuous flow basis. Each system features ultra-rapid heating and unique design technology for extended shelf life foods, biomaterials and aseptic products.
